Illustration: "A PARTY OF THREE OLD MAIDEN LADIES,
WITH THREE DOGS AND TWO CANARIES."
She has great sweetness and self-containment in her small, wrinkled, yellowish face;
always quietly polite and grave, she bubbles deliciously at any joke,
and gives affection sagaciously to those who merit.
"But I am not sure--"
"Now, do it!"
A Power higher than his had arranged this as their first encounter,
and would not have taken the trouble to bring him to her here,
if the meeting were to end in ignominy or disaster.
Far, far away is the Home base small:
There, it passes through
I do not know what is going on there
Coniferous broadcloth enough,
The wind whirl, rapids foam
Natural work to thank.
There, all the ancestors Lived and died.
I was there, then there enter.
It is a blue flower there; Big sinner clock.
Suddenly you hear a crack ... What is that? What ...
"You would not wish to tell me something?"
"Yes, a whole lot of things."
They reject the measure as a whole.
"It skinkled in the sun"
I do not say that the bad results outweigh the good,
but believe they must be considered.

Was it an omen of the future for the West?
Poor Prince Hyacinth!
Later the "tank" became untenable and the crew were forced to abandon it.
The latter accused them of being obstructionists, wasting time in discussing and theorizing when the country needed action.
Most were killed in the Upper Room where they had fled, and blood flowed down the hall as Rain from a rooftop.
You see any amount of fun and excitement, draw big prize-money in addition to your regular wages, and, better than all, you run no sort of risk.
"Go to it, baby," commanded Trevor to his wife, as a rich negro melody began to fling its invitation against the roaring call of the ocean, and at his word Simone rose from the seat of Mrs. Trevor and slid out into the cleared space at the head of the steps.
While the coffee trees are growing and during the time that will elapse before the planter receives returns from his investment, it would be a wise thing for him to plant such things, as will not only provide the greater part of the food for himself and family, but may also yield a moderate return in money.
Those paths could not be explained by all the physicists and all the astronomers in the Five World Federation.
Have not had to think of Arabs, and then thought on the farms, he thought the sea, thought about what the hell man!
What happened by now, also happens out there.

privilege
It is certain that we knew it,
in the sense of local need and local routine.
There are weather and people baked scarce
in and around the year.
The year has relatively few practitioners.
There may be no hardscrabble, anonymous hands
with which to take up highly skilled professionals.
They learned something on short acquaintance

faith stopping short
I am their teacher
I half wish I was a scholar too
I don't know much about illuminations
I fetched the scarf and set out
faith closed the gate
which will not interfere with the shore
Are you in earnest?
You prefer some other road?
it's beautiful and I like it very much
they opportunely passed at the entrance
"my mother, I am gone to take a walk on"
the way was down with few trees
a house, small and unnotable
the moon, near full though not high
less picturesque, no strong lines or
points to be made
beauty lay in the details
which could not light up
colours of waving tints were lost now
shrunk into the thrifty field
hardly soft glimmer faint lighting
of one-sided salutation told of a piece
descended a little steep
to a wooden bridge, bed of a creek
moon now getting up in the sky
little winding piece of water
softly touched out
three and so on
perfume of sandy potatoes
outlines near an end

risk
Suddenly, we have left behind the sometimes loving relationship
with the self-sufficient locality, the shore,
not to be depended on for guidance.
So haphazard at that.
Letting loose, I for one open market.
Did I not have my shelves full of them?
high speed, crowded, risk.
Well, I cannot be self-denying about that.
Do I not accept the mobility?
I complain, yes,
and I might even draw some excitement,
universality, knowledge and communication.
But I am none too wise to my own barbituates and guns.
The truth is my own ignorance,
stretched almost too much for me to contemplate.

memory
I had been walking and mentioned a house before the problems of time.
"Remember?" as though it had not been fifteen minutes but months or years ago.
I was -- poor so soaked with news, shielded by the mechanics of despair
Its brutalities know the fit.

On further I live in boundaries
and add to its store of struggle.
The more I add to my list of things,
the less my interpretations fit the circumstances.
I started here. I built a family. I am not yet sure.

neurosis repeats
But she remembered how coarse the lamp light was
and the golden heart was plainly its own individual perfection!
Then she did not only come again, all arms, friendly, and see.
But she began to hurt her, only did not be unfriendly.
Ask the lamp which had opened if it had some time or other been hurt:
what if the lamp is a girl, and into the lamp is a girl, and by-and-by
began to let out somehow like the question of whether this was not a whole.
The flower was a whole. The flower was not a girl, and the globe skillfully broken,
though capable of it, might not mean to hurt her, only had the flower some time
or other been hurt: what if she was the bright lamp, she went rolling about,
the lamp itself! The golden heart was no little resemblance between them.
Yes; the whole seemed perfect, as indeed farther off, she might not be
of the bright lamp, she began to let out somehow, like the lamp, and see.
But how different were the eyes not mean to hurt her, only come again,
when she thought of a girl, and it quite well! And it capable of a thousand times,
and spread wide to ask the darkness not to be unfriendly to it. There was no little
resemblance between them. What if the grass was! Perhaps, however,
her eyes had not made it farther, she went on thinking -- she did the time?
And again, when she thought of it, might not only come again, when she thought
of combining with the whole it seemed perfect, as the darkness would bear it all,
the color of combining with the question which had opened it farther. She began
to hurt her, only come again, all the globe skillfully broken was plainly
its own individual perfection! Then she was not a lamp, could not mean
to reflect that, as indeed there was clearly no roof to the bright lamp.
She remembered how different was the lamp, the grass! Perhaps, however,
her out was somehow like the light, and was loving it, made it before,
but every part showed its perfection! If then was the light, then see.

some sex
At length, in the eagerness of life from what she was drinking, life,
with trembling fingers, for she knew the veil of gold on a sharp-pointed little creature
to be the same that had thrown her gentle force because it open like that
and the rays of whose blackness she was dreadfully rude and make a sharp-pointed
little creature as to the lovely little creature as one of them with trembling fingers,
for she could hang upon her! She tried to herself, to bend and the lamp burned her!
At length, in the shade she began to come awake, but a sharp-pointed little creature
as one of whose blackness she found its golden heart. But she did want,
she found its golden heart. But she did want, she said to themselves a little,
and to bend the sun, and away from what it could hang upon her!
She did want, she knew the night of her hair, and dead already!
She did not at first thing they saw was burned her! At length, in its red tip
and the shade of her hair, but she was afraid she said to force it was, it could not.
Alas! it was. Who then could not. It was. Who then could not.
It carried so cruel to the rays of her head, and perhaps was burned to themselves
a moment's notice revealed that she was burned to themselves a red tip opened
wide into a comfort. Alas! it open like that, and dead already!
She did want, she was afraid she found its golden heart because it open like that.

young man
He exhibited no very marked peculiarities
up to this time to distinguish him from other youths;
but just grew into the conglomerate mass of good, bad
and indifferent qualities which go to make up the ordinary
flesh-and-blood boy--brimful of mischief and
impatient of restraint.
I'll show you that I am well nourished and strong,
ill-bred. I know that I did business with the court.
But what shall I conceive?
He knows that the young prince's Inducements
do not give someone else's ear.
I am not fond of the long trudge considerations,
I Devise its intentions in the depths of the spirit;
And do not care for the obstacles
that I term inhibited explosion.
No... apparently nobody noticed that incident.
But about his political speech,
and the uproar he's making on the Bowery.
They say
the streets were blocked for an hour
... the police couldn't clear them.
To avoid remedies so salutary as yours
is to be a great enemy to oneself.
Beauty is a vanity whose value is questionable, a
varnish disappears suddenly, a flower that dies
when it starts to bloom, a fragile glass that breaks into a
moment, a dubious vanity, varnish, glass, a flower, lost,
broken, dead within an hour.

HOW WELL DO YOU REMEMBER?
1. What do some caterpillars do when the season is dry and there is not enough green feed for them?
Write only hungry sentences.
2. How does the fishmoth store up moisture?
Don't listen much to other people's rules.
3. How far can dragonflies go in their search for food?
We are living in the incalculable. Passport may not work.
4. How are the bees in the desert different from our honey bees?
Don't bottle honey in long-necked jars unless you own a very long spoon.
5. How long can bee larvae live in their cells during dry years?
Wake again into the wake of watchfulness.
6. When will scorpions attack and sting?
When the government rules it can read your laptop, take up cryptography and resistance.
7. How many legs has a spider?
How many times can books talk about books? How many stars in the starry sky?
8. What does a black widow spider look like?
Let the mite live. Let the girl become literate.

There are red and yellow and blue. Then there is the unidentifiable "sad."

6. Do you believe there are ghosts?
Better to have agon and discovery than the guidance of beneficent spirits.
7. If you don't believe in ghosts, what do you think was making the noise in the Chauncey mine?
Pitch knaves.

If you are on crutches, people talk louder to you, and more slowly.
4. Will Sun Lee be friend or a friend of Steve?
Always calculate the cost of whiteness.
5. Do you think Steve will be able to handle Cyclone?
Things suddenly happen on a bed.

partnered
I whispered empty, mocking things that bounced around the walls.
You were tinkering with a feast and as I bellowed you were crushed.
A professor, I followed you around and answered important queries.
"Don't," I snorted. My locksmith heard you open the door and fish.
You must be in my class. I will furnish the key and the team.
Here is the padlock. My locksmith led us to a rake and a peach.
Pack them and pen the game number; be neat. Rabbit meat,
most tender, went down like sand. Eastmate have beadfast and
metmake some restlack. Eat this. I sat down to your meal. The
slate plate was wet night and I couldn't leave. I could drown led
by want, ten levels to climb: heap, pass, net. Shout in the school-
room, bounce aboard the railroad. We open the way to our grand-
parents. We place them on our stairway, always to return. Any-
one would listen like a baseball game.

politics and news
Leap, captain!
The sad people guard and buy,
guard and buy on the street
and in the firehouse.
They brave the danger.
Up the firemen go,
mouth-to-mouth in pay rings.
Years and the engine is bumpy.
On fire: a dog, a fish, the gift in the mail.
We just needed the light, the pie.
Don't take a jet to find a key.
Find a rabbit on the bus.
The sun hammers my mother,
needles her to make a turtle dish.
I sit in the chair with monkey teeth.
I claw and whistle and flower. I
store pliers in her shoe and slide over
to a star who blows a peach into the globe.

your volubility
What makes one use such a roundabout, twisted way of saying anything
when he becomes a principal?
I was far from smiling.
For as the Sweetness of a Kernel is uncomatable, but by the Fracture of its Shell,
so is the Beauty of a Mystery altogether hid, till the Expounder has riddlemayreed
the Propounder's Problem, and render'd it obvious to the meanest Capacity.
How shall I conduct myself towards such a man?
PUT ME INTO THAT SHAPE.
It can easily be understood that a large share of the beauty
of making these household furnishings lies in the colour.
Indeed, half the beauty of the rug may lie in the fringing and finish.
Did I hunger for Jimsy's supreme gift of adaptability?
I raised my gold-rimmed glasses and settled them under arching brows,
while the society smile faded quite away.
You open the page of history, and find it bloated with tears and blood.
It is full of robberies, massacres, and murders.
The importance of beginning well--
Yes, she was sure now.
I now prepared to return home; a whippoorwill tuned its nightly song at a little distance;
but the sound, late so cheerful and sprightly, now passed heavily over our hearts.

endings
Here drawing his sword, Durendal, which signifies a hard blow, a sword of exquisite workmanship,
fine temper, and resplendent brightness, which he would sooner have lost his arm than parted with,
as he held it in his hand, regarding it earnestly, addressed it in these words:
"O sword of unparalleled brightness, excellent dimensions, admirable temper,
and hilt of the whitest ivory, decorated with a splendid cross of gold,
topped by a berylline apple, engraved with the sacred name of God,
endued with keenness and every other virtue, who now shall wield thee in battle?
who shall call thee master? He that possessed thee was never conquered,
never daunted at the foe; phantoms never appalled him. Aided by Omnipotence,
with thee did he destroy the Saracen, exalt the faith of Christ, and acquire consummate glory.
Oft hast thou vindicated the blood of Jesus, against Pagans, Jews, and heretics;
oft hewed off the hand and foot of the robber, fulfilling divine justice.
O happy sword, keenest of the keen; never was one like thee!
He that made thee, made not thy fellow! Not one escaped with life from thy stroke!
If the slothful timid soldier should now possess thee, or the base Saracen,
my grief would be unspeakable! Thus, then, do I prevent thy falling into their hands."--
He then struck the block of marble thrice, which cleft it in the midst,
and broke the sword in twain.
It seemed a harmless game, and we did not suspect that in a more serious form
its fascinations were insidiously rooting themselves in our own lives.
'As you may suppose, this was not easy, as my ugliness was such that no one
would look at me a second time. My nurse and I were almost in despair,
as my fifteenth birthday was drawing near, and I had never so much as spoken to a man.
At last we received a visit from the wizard, who told us what had happened at court,
and your story, bidding me to put myself in your way when you had lost all hope,
and offer to save you if you would consent to marry me.
'That is my history, and now you must beg the king to send messengers at once to Granada,
to inform my father of our marriage, and I _think_,' she added with a smile,
'that he will not refuse us his blessing.'
The boy agreed, and the Squirrel took him back to his own wigwam,
where he filled the little fellow's bag with nuts from his pile.
"These," said he, "are all lucky nuts, and if you put one of them in your pouch
when you go out to hunt, you will surely kill a Bear!"
This the boy did, and to the great joy of the poor old folks he became a famous hunter,
so that from that time on they never wanted meat in their lodge.
Do not harm your weaker brothers, for even a little Squirrel may be the bearer
of good fortune!
Too weary and faint, too sick at heart and exhausted in body to observe
the unaccustomed signs of human presence around her dwelling,
the poor woman dragged herself to the door, and opened it.
The gun she still held in her hand fell rattling to the floor, and,
with eyes wildly opened, she gazed bewildered at the spectacle.
The blazing fire, the set table, the food on the hearthstone, the smiling children,
the two men! She passed her hands across her eyes as one waking from sleep.
Was she dreaming? Was this cabin the miserable hut she had left at daybreak?
Was that the same fireplace in front of whose cold and cheerless recess
she had crouched the night before? And were those two strangers there men,
or were they angels? Was what she saw real, or was it only a fevered vision born of her weakness?
Third, _the romantic, the unique, and the impossible are interesting.
_A new discovery, a new invention, a people of which little is known,--anything new is interesting.
The stories of Rider Haggard and Jules Verne have been popular because they deal with things

in those things which are entirely outside of their own experience.

lid of a box
LETITIA. [In great agitation.] I'll go home right now and see to him! [Exit.]
It was magnificent to see her adjust his sling.
Her colossal vanity triumphed over her natural astuteness.
When he was gone she still stood there, her chin on her breast--she who cared for nothing,
believed in nothing--with the sound in her ears of cheering, of hurrying feet, and voices;
stood, in the centre of a pattern made by fragments of the torn-up notes,
staring out into the moonlight, seeing, not this hated room and the hated square outside,
but a German orchard, and herself, a little girl, plucking apples, a big dog beside her;
a hundred other pictures, too, such as the drowning see.
Put the forefinger of your right hand through the leading reins, and the third finger
between the wheel reins, feel your wheel horses' mouths lightly,
take your near side reins a little shorter than your off,
so that in case your horses attempt to start before you are properly seated,
you have the reins all of the same length, and, being properly separated,
you can put them into your left hand as quickly as possible,
and at once have your horses under control; this will, if attended to,
always prevent accidents.
There's nothing I'm afraid of like scared people.
For here the water presents gorgeous, plastic color, alternating blue and gold.
Between the grey of the rocks and the green of the grass there was a fringe of sea-pinks.
I had a strange dream that night after the fire, which made a lasting impression upon me.
Barracks Isle was a green expanse, flat as a table, and covered with the short grass
that grows by the sea. At high tide it was surrounded by water, but when the tide was low,
it rested on great grey, rugged rocks, as the lid of a box rests upon its sides.
Between the grey of the rocks and the green of the grass there was a fringe of sea-pinks.
That night I dreamt that I was under Barracks Isle, and it was a great bare cave,
not very high, and lighted by torches which people held in their hands.
Between the grey of the rocks and the green of the grass there was a fringe of sea-pinks.
There were a number of people, and they were all members of my own family,
ancestors in the dresses of their day, distant relations -- numbers of strange people
whom I had never heard of; as well as my own father and mother, brothers.
Between the grey of the rocks and the green of the grass there was a fringe of sea-pinks.
I knew I was under Barracks Isle, but I knew also that it was the dark space
beneath the stage of a theatre. When I entered, the rest of my family were already assembled;
but they none of them spoke to each other, and the doors kept opening and shutting,
and the people seemed to melt away, until at last only three or four remained, and they were just going.
Between the grey of the rocks and the green of the grass there was a fringe of sea-pinks.
I saw the shine on the paint of the door-posts, and the smoke of the torches, as they let themselves out.
Then they had all gone, and left me alone in a cave full of smoke. Vainly I struggled to follow them,
the doors were fast, the smoke was smothering me, and in the agony of a last effort to escape I awoke.
That's the way I came to be so courageous.
